Lakeway, TX – Travis County

Population 13,168 // Official Website // Schools

Lakeway is a 1,200-acre village located on the south shore of Lake Travis, 25 miles west of downtown Austin in the scenic Texas hill country. The area was originally inhabited by the Tonkawa Indians, who were likely drawn by the temperate climate, abundant wildlife and numerous water sources nearby. It is reasoned that the white settlers who later migrated here were also attracted by these valuable resources.

The City of Lakeway was founded on a 2,700 acre ranch which was acquired for the development of a resort community in 1962. The city got its name from the Lakeway Land Corporation, the real estate developer behind this plan. Property sales began in early 1963, followed by the opening of the Lakeway Inn & Marina later that year. Today Lakeway boasts a full-service spa and hotel, golf courses, tennis courts, marinas dotting a 65-mile-long lake, a private airport, and 500 acres of designated green space including trails and parks. Other popular outdoor activities available include biking, camping, fishing, boating and scuba diving.

The prestigious community of Lakeway is not only known for its recreation and natural beauty; the schools in Lakeway rank among the best in the United States. In 2011 Lake Travis school district was rated “Exemplary” by the Texas Education Agency. There are a number of options nearby for the more than 78% of the district’s graduating students who go on to college, including the University of Texas at Austin, Saint Edward’s University, Austin Community College, and Concordia University.
